The life and artwork of Viktor Borisov-Musatov is an ongoing movement, self-perfection and overcoming of distressing circumstances. Borisov-Musatov is associated with the Silver Age epoch and symbolism; yet his art attracted would-be representatives of artistic avantgarde.
The project will acquaint viewers with the artist’s unique method of painting, in which he integrated photography into his creations. The balance of the artist’s photo essays and pictorial pieces will become an important theme of the exposition. The special section of the exhibition will be devoted to sketches of monumental paintings that reflected the artist’s searching in the field of arts synthesis and stepping beyond art into the space of real life.
The exhibition will display over 140 works by Viktor Borisov-Musatov from twenty museums and private collections including well-known masterpieces such as Self-Portrait with Sister (1898, State Russian Museum), Tapestry (State Tretyakov Gallery, 1901), The Emerald Necklace (State Tretyakov Gallery, 1903-1904) and Autumn (1905).
