With this year’s acquisitions, the Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen (Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony) once again sets a marker for the promotion of contemporary art in Saxony. A total of 29 works by 25 Saxon artists were purchased, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, and video works. The total value of the acquisitions is approximately 145,000 euros.

The exhibition Win/win presents these new acquisitions at the Museum Gunzenhauser of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz – for the last time in this location: following a three-year partnership between the Kulturstiftung and the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, this will be the final presentation of the acquisitions at this venue. Since 2024, the series at Museum Gunzenhauser has offered an overview of the diversity of contemporary artistic practice in Saxony. This year’s selection likewise reflects the high quality of contemporary art production in the region and offers insight into a wide range of artistic concerns – from technique and material to socio-political engagement.

Works were acquired from: Steven Black, the artist group “die Blaue Distanz,” Stephanie Dost, Sebastian Gögel, Susanne Hampe, Stefanie Hollerbach, Franziska Holstein, Lucas Kaiser, Yvette Kießling, Lena Koneberg, Benjamin Kunath, Lisa Liepelt, Sophie Lindner, Karl Lobo, Virginia Lorenzetti, Metulczki, Ulrike Mundt, Danny Otto, Josef Panda, Franziska Rist, Sandra Rosenstiel, Suntje Sagerer, Stefan Schwarzer, Winnie Seifert, and Su-Ran Sichling.

Background: Since 2005, the Kulturstiftung has acquired contemporary visual art from Saxony every year. The aim of these acquisitions is to provide financial support to artists at key points in their careers and to make their work publicly accessible. The focus is on artists who are based or reside in the Free State of Saxony. The nomination and selection of the works is carried out by the independent Advisory Board for Visual Arts and the foundation’s board. Following their public presentation, the works — acquired with funds from the Saxon State Parliament — become part of the art collection (Kunstfonds) of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. To date, 783 works or groups of works have been acquired this way, with a total budget of around 3.3 million euros.
