The exhibition Stasys Eidrigevičius. Hommage à Čiurlionis is on display at the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art (V. Putvinskio St. 55, Kaunas).

M. K. Čiurlionis’ unique work became a model for other artists. The creative relationship between Stasys Eidrigevičius and M. K. Čiurlionis is different. He pays him respect and thanks him for the fact that he is not alone in seeing the world this way. To understand Čiurlionis’ work requires a deeper, sometimes even transcendent understanding.

While M.K. Čiurlionis’ work is based on nature and the world of fairy tales, Stasys tends to depict the world in a grotesque way, revealing its absurdity and paradox through figures and objects. However, the works of Stasys and Čiurlionis are close in a visual sense. Both works are executed in a similar technique: pastel, tempera, watercolor, and pencil. They share the minimalism of the images and the transcendental uncertainty of their meanings. The figure, the object, the animal, and the bird become a sign that says more than the eye can see. Perhaps this is why both M. K. Čiurlionis and Stasys Eidrigevičius are particularly appreciated and understood by the Japanese. The courage to create according to his own vision of the world opened the door for Stasys to the art world in the broadest sense. His name is known from West to East – from the USA to Japan. Stasys, who similarly sees the world, communicates with Čiurlionis as an equal.

The relationship between S. Eidrigevičius and Čiurlionis grew stronger and stronger until finally, Stasys decided to convey this connection through the medium of art. For the first time, the artist exhibited several works dedicated to the great artist at the exhibition Hommage à Čiurlionis at the M. K. Čiurlionis Memorial Museum in Druskininkai in 2018 and after in M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art in Kaunas.

This time, the exhibition from the Stasys Museum – Stasys Mus.e.um –, which hosted the exhibition from 27 09 2025 to 28 02 2026 is moving to the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art. The most fascinating detail is that his pieces of art are not replicas of Čiurlionis’ works and the topics of his paintings differ, yet, when you look at them you get the feeling that the artists are linked by a similar perception of the world.

Likewise Čiurlionis, Stasys has a special liking for letters. He emphasizes not only their calligraphic quality but composes them as part of the drawing as well. The portrait-like Stasys’ S often becomes the unifying element in the composition, and the letter Č links the two Lithuanian artists‘ surnames. Among S. Eidrigevičius' latest works are masks with illustrations of M. K. Čiurlionis' works.

The exhibition presents the author’s sketchbooks filled mostly with pencil drawings that capture his travel impressions. Many of them illustrate Stasys’ habit to draw on Čiurlionis’ face for the sake of identifying with him, a play or discussion. Both in his life and during the artistic journey, Stasys succeeds to create a dialogue with Čiurlionis. The exhibition Hommage à Čiurlionis is the most striking manifestation of the conversation between two geniuses.
