With the exhibition Dietmar Brehm: point and echo, the Linz Castle Museum dedicates a comprehensive solo exhibition to one of the most influential figures in the Upper Austrian art scene. The show focuses on paintings and graphic works from recent years, and also includes a selection from Brehm's extensive film oeuvre.
Game of signs
Dietmar Brehm's art is characterized by a distinctive visual language, often employing a few striking motifs that he places on canvas or paper. Despite recognizable forms and minimalist compositions, his imagery is never easy to decipher. Rather, it is an absurd interplay of signs and supposed codes that defines his visual world.
Point and echo
Brehm's associative approach to concepts, symbols, and images is also reflected in the exhibition's title. The dot is a recurring motif in his painting: placed in the picture as a round, monochrome area, it functions both as an abstraction and as a concrete motif. The revisiting of subjects in the sense of an echo, both in different phases of his work and across media, has also been a constant in Brehm's oeuvre for decades.
Avant-garde filmmaker
Internationally, Dietmar Brehm has been considered a leading figure in avant-garde film since the 1970s. His cinematic work is characterized by an intense exploration of human perception and is marked by techniques such as deliberate misexposure, strong contrasts, flickering montages, and the use of found footage. A specially designed black box for the exhibition will offer insights into Dietmar Brehm's filmmaking through a curated program.
