This exhibition celebrates the remarkable paintings, drawings, and prints by women artists from the Keith and Jim Straw collection. The Philadelphia-based couple began collecting art in the 1970s, at a time when it was still relatively uncommon to focus specifically on women artists. Their early interest centered on figures active in the 19th century, laying the foundation for a collection that would grow in both scope and significance over the decades.
As their vision evolved, the Straws expanded their collection to include works by contemporary artists, often forming personal relationships with the makers themselves. This ongoing engagement reflects not only a commitment to supporting women artists across generations, but also a deeper investment in the stories, contexts, and lived experiences behind the works. The collection thus becomes both an artistic and human archive, shaped by dialogue and connection.
In celebration of the promised gift of works from the Straw collection to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the exhibition brings together notable pieces by artists such as Lilly Martin Spencer, Suzanne Valadon, Betye Saar, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, and Kay WalkingStick, among others. Together, these works highlight the resilience, innovation, and enduring creativity of women artists, offering a powerful reflection on their contributions across time.
