Gladstone is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Maureen Gallace in Seoul, the artist’s first presentation in South Korea.
Gallace is widely recognized for her intimate portrayals of coastal and rural environments in the American Northeast. Working at a small scale, she renders houses, shorelines, and quiet landscapes with a distilled visual language that balances observation and abstraction. Her scenes feel both specific and elusive, suggesting places shaped as much by memory and perception as by direct experience.
The exhibition brings together a group of oil paintings on panel alongside acrylic paintings on paper. Across both formats, Gallace explores the relationship between repetition and variation, revisiting recurring motifs—modest homes, open water, and stretches of road—through shifts in light, color, and atmosphere, while resisting fixed narratives.
Rooted in a recent transitional period of living and working near the Connecticut coast, as well as New York City, these works reflect a heightened sensitivity to the subjects Gallace has long painted. In their restraint and focus, her works offer moments of stillness that open onto broader reflections on place, perception, and the passage of time.
