In the exhibition Ver & Nabij – Gebroeders Van Lymborch × Contemporary Artists, held at the Stevenskerk in Nijmegen, visitors are invited to explore the dialogue between past and present. The exhibition reveals how the extraordinary late medieval paintings created by the three Van Lymborch brothers—Herman, Paul, and Johan, born in Nijmegen—resonate with and inspire the work of today’s renowned and emerging artists. Set within the monumental space of the Stevenskerk, this encounter creates a layered experience where history and contemporaneity unfold side by side.
Ver & Nabij introduces a fresh and dynamic perspective on the world-famous legacy of the Van Lymborch brothers. Their refined visual language, rich symbolism, and technical mastery are reinterpreted through contemporary artistic practices, allowing their influence to extend far beyond the medieval manuscript tradition. The exhibition highlights how their work continues to spark new ideas and artistic responses across centuries.
This dialogue takes shape through a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, installation, and textile art, as well as photography, video, and animation. Unexpectedly, fashion, hats, and jewellery also become part of the narrative, expanding the scope of the exhibition and underscoring the enduring relevance of the Van Lymborchs’ imagination. Together, these diverse approaches offer an immersive exploration of continuity, transformation, and creative proximity across time.
