From his earliest works, Per Kirkeby worked continuously to establish and develop his own vocabulary. His method was tirelessly to move between different media. He attached importance to painting as well as drawing, printmaking, sculpture, the blackboard, film and the written word for the development of the language that can be described as Kirkeby’s.
His visual language was shaped by inspiration from nature. Nature is not a motif in the traditional sense, but a method and a way of thinking that runs through his entire practice, just as his scientific background as a geologist is also evident in his vocabulary.
The exhibition in the gallery should be seen in this light. We present works that contain Kirkeby’s language expressed through different media and across time. On view are works from the 1960s on masonite, early drawings, gouaches, monotypes, bronze sculptures, blackboards and, of course, paintings. The works in the exhibition were created in the period from 1964 to 2011.
