MAKI Gallery is pleased to present Year-end light, its second solo exhibition with Ayumu Yamamoto, at Maebashi Galleria Gallery 2. Bringing together a new body of paintings alongside a sweeping site-specific installation that rises through the venue’s eight-meter-high atrium, the exhibition highlights the artist’s continued exploration of perception, atmosphere, and material presence. Yamamoto’s interventions within the architectural space establish a heightened sense of scale, inviting viewers to engage with his work both intimately and spatially.
From canvases built up with richly layered paint to drawings articulated through delicate, almost whisper-like lines, Yamamoto’s works take shape through a dynamic interplay of disparate pictorial elements. Fragments overlap, textures collide, and traces accumulate, creating a surface language that resists immediate interpretation. As viewers move through the exhibition, they are encouraged to map connections between these shifting visual cues, constructing meaning much like one would piece together a landscape or chart an unfamiliar terrain.
Immersed in moments where light and darkness subtly intertwine, Yamamoto’s eclectic compositions invite us to pause, observe, and contemplate. His world is one of complexity—of quiet ruptures, luminous intervals, and layered impressions that reflect the contradictions of contemporary life. By navigating these visual constellations, we are offered a space to slow down and reconsider the ways we perceive and inhabit the world around us.
