Hokusai Manga and the thirty-six views of Mount Fuji—two of Katsushika Hokusai’s masterworks meet digital technology in this imaginative exhibition.

Hokusai’s world-renowned sketchbooks, comprising 15 volumes in total, contain various images of people, landscapes, and flora and fauna, as well as the supernatural, counting more than three thousand examples. Some of them are in series or groups, arranged in such a way that may have influenced the ideas behind the manga and anime culture of today. The work has also been a great source of inspiration for European artists of various times.

The thirty-six views of Mount Fuji, meanwhile, is a landmark oeuvre of landscape woodblocks, not only showcasing the magnificence of this iconic mountain, but also realizing dynamic portrayal of people and their environments, which allows us to have a glimpse of their lives and customs. The great wave (off Kanagawa) is probably the most widely known image in the world representing Japanese art.

The exhibition offers an opportunity to fully appreciate these two collective works, both in scope and depth, enriched by the accompanying high-definition digital materials. The prints and a digital representation of the details together coordinate a voyage into Hokusai’s creative ideas and expressions that never cease to fascinate the world.
