Following the exhibition Painting after painting at S.M.A.K., Plus-One Projects presents its own idiosyncratic continuation: After painting after painting (after painting).
This exhibition is a playful yet sincere wink at the institutional reading of painting in Belgium. Not an Art historical reconstruction, but a contemporary Salon des Refusés: an alternative footnote, or rather, a new sentence in a story still unfolding.
We invite a group of artists, born after 1970 and connected to Belgium, who each in their own way question and enrich the medium of painting. What interests us is how artists engage with painting today: as an open field for formal exploration, as a carrier of images and ideas, as a reflection on digital image culture, or as a sensorial statement, whether in seriousness or irony, with freedom or precision.
After painting after painting (after painting) is not a critique towards the S.M.A.K. exhibition, but an invitation to continue, and to keep continuing, the conversation on painting today.
We cannot (and do not wish to) deliver a complete history of painting in Belgium. What we can do is formulate a new chapter together, with works that effortlessly belong to the present while looking forward.
