Takudzwanashe "Taku" Mamvura is a Berlin-based writer holding a Master's Degree in International Relations and Cultural Diplomacy from Hochschule Furtwangen University in Germany. His articles address a wide range of topics, not limited to geopolitics, culture, and sport. He is an avid sports fan, particularly of Arsenal FC, with an interest in the English Premier League, Champions League, and boxing. In his spare time, he enjoys novels and adventurous travel, reading history and philosophy, fitness, poetry, and music.

Born and raised as the second of three children in Harare, Zimbabwe, during the late 90’s, his early formative years were largely spent in an epoch of great uncertainty and upheaval in the Southern African country. The 2000s brought the chaos of the land seizures in Zimbabwe, the economic catastrophe caused by sanctions and hyperinflation, and the country’s first government of national unity after widely disputed and violent elections. In the following years, other events like the coup d’etat that removed long-reigning President of Zimbabwe, Robert G. Mugabe, and the response of regional bodies like SADC and the AU created cause for pause and reflection. These events profoundly affected the writer, cultivating a deeply held fascination with the relationships between political systems, their ruling classes, and the people.

Desiring to pair this fascination with expertise, he moved to Istanbul, Türkiye in 2014 to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in political science and international relations, which was subsequently completed in 2019. Istanbul offered an irreplicable experience, as its cultural position—the meeting point between the East and the West, majority Muslim yet secularly governed, NATO member yet friendly with Russia—offered a complex compromise of beautifully juxtapositioned political perspectives. Likewise, this period offered Takudzwanashe much in the way of a unique experience. At this time, the Syrian Civil War raged on, the Arab Spring had fully sprung, ISIS terror attacks would occur sporadically in Istanbul, and an alleged attempt to overthrow the Turkish government was foiled. In addition, the rich presence of numerous Near Eastern expats offered the opportunity to connect with the different nationals from the region on a human level, while studying their political history from an academic perspective, affording a more comprehensive understanding of the political events and background in the Near East.

In 2020, he moved to Berlin, Germany, to pursue his Master’s Degree in International Relations and Cultural Diplomacy, which was later achieved in 2022. His Master’s degree completed in Berlin offered a more Western and Eurocentric lens from which to examine the world; as Europe was not spared from the reverberation of the aforementioned events. Particularly given the consequent refugee crisis that would present itself to Europe. Shortly after, he worked for the International Organization for Migration—the UN Organization for Migration, until September 2024 within the area of donor relations. Germany offered a distinctly different socio-political proposition. An indelibly western ‘Multikulti’ city, with more in the way of peace, stability, and democratic development, Berlin has offered a sharp departure from the relatively socially collective presentation of Harare and Istanbul in many respects.

As a result, he does not strictly hold fast to any particular ideology but rather uses the appropriate principles contained in the major worldviews to provide insightful reflections on world events. He has been influenced by authors and actors from across the political-economic ideological spectrum, including but not limited to Kwame Nkrumah, Niall Ferguson, Immanuel Wallerstein, John Mearsheimer, Thomas Piketty, Dani Rodrik, Ahmet Davutoglu, and Mark Blyth.

As a keen observer of culture and society, Takudzwanashe writes thought-provoking articles that introduce the reader to different angles they may not have considered prior. While deeply suspicious of claims of complete objectivity, his goal with every article is to provide an excavation of the facts, presented in a coherent, concise, and compelling way.
