Exploring human curiosity and decision making, paintings and prints turn mathematical topology into allegory. Young figures interact with a variety of forms including Möbius strips, Ochiai knots, Klein bottles, and Mandelbrot sets.
Ellen Heck’s beautiful and nuanced works on paper have been well-received in group exhibitions at the downtown Asheville gallery. Wonderland is Heck’s first solo exhibition at Momentum. It marks the debut of her contemporary paintings of figures in the landscape with abstracted and floral elements rendered in thick impasto.
Ellen Heck grew up in Austin, Texas, and received her degrees from Brown University and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is currently living and working as a fine art printmaker in North Carolina. She was an artist-in-residence at Kala Art Institute and artist-member of the California Society of Printmakers, and her work is often figurative and project-based.
