Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Cats and apples, the upcoming exhibition at his gallery located at 1062 North Orange Grove in Los Angeles. The show centers on two enduring motifs that have captivated artists for centuries: cats and apples. Spanning over one hundred years of artistic production, the exhibition includes a wide range of media—painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, and video.
The exhibition features works by fifteen artists: Georges Braque, Joan Brown, Leidy Churchman, Edwin Dickinson, Vincent Fecteau, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Katharina Fritsch, Robert Gober, Nan Goldin, Peter Hujar, Gary Hume, Laura Owens, Pablo Picasso, Linda Stark, and Sturtevant. Drawing from diverse sources such as art historical references like memento mori and Ingres’s bathers, 1960s cartoons, and childhood memories, these artists reinterpret familiar imagery in unexpected ways.
Through a playful yet deeply reflective lens, Cats and apples invites viewers to consider how ordinary symbols can carry profound emotional and cultural resonance. The exhibition offers a fresh perspective on timeless themes, celebrating both their historical legacy and contemporary relevance.
