Geary is pleased to present Garden of the sphinx, a solo show by Dana Sherwood, on view June 21 – August 10, 2025 at the gallery.

This show represents a body of work made over the past two years that investigates the mystery, riddle and the alchemy of the Sphinx as a symbol in archaeology and as a metaphor for the creative process.

Sherwood’s work explores the beauty, magic and connection, associated with ritual, nature and celebration. The figures in her work pay homage to women of literature, myth and art history. Alice in Wonderland, Medusa and Persephone feature prominently – women embarking on underworld journeys. The paintings often portray wild animals pregnant with figures, seated or lounging inside the bellies of beasts surrounded by confectionery, cakes and sweets.

Sherwood investigates the relationship between humans and the natural world, relying on her own style of magical-realism to portray connection between species. Some of her subjects we know well from mythology—swans, snakes and horses, others emerge from the artist’s personal mythology: snails, raccoons, and deer. Sherwood’s work invites viewers into an enchanting wonderland-esque universe, magical and bright, while conveying ardent messages related to the convergence of ecology, mythmaking and eco-feminism.

Garden of the sphinx will feature oil and watercolor paintings as well as ceramic work by Sherwood.
