The Galleria Riccardo Crespi is proud to present the solo show End of an Era by the Swiss artists Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs.
The two artists collaborate since 2003, mostly working in the field of photography, nevertheless their practice includes sculpture and installations. The subject of their works are often everyday objects charged with unexpected and deceptive meanings, creating images in which reality and fiction collide.
The exhibition End of an era is a selection of photographic works and sculptures, which investigate the concept of photography as a medium and as a mechanism of creation. The works reflect the perception of the photographic image in its ambivalence between being a mere recording of visual data and a representation of an imaginary world. The title End of an era refers to the persistent debate on the death of analogue photography, recently intensified in connection to the downfall of Kodak.
The installation is a recreation of a photographic showroom displaying cameras made out of unusual materials such as ceramic and wood, perfectly functional and equipped with precision lenses.
The accompanying series of photographs is a result of experiments with rotating devices: the depicted objects do not exist in the real world only in images taken with long exposure times. The camera thus becomes part of the creative process, being the only medium through which these forms can come to life. The artists transform the gallery space into a Wunderkammer, mixing scientific and technical aspects and creating a dreamlike world halfway between reality and fiction.
Taiyo Onorato e Nico Krebs were both born in Switzerland in 1979, living and working in Switzerland and Berlin.
