Things are heating up at MOTAT’s Whare tinei ahi – The fire station! This permanent exhibition offers a deep dive into the history of firefighting in Aotearoa, showcasing everything from early manual equipment to iconic motorised vehicles that have protected New Zealand communities over the decades.
MOTAT’s Emergency Collection includes an impressive range of historic artefacts such as gas masks, medals, alarms, and essential firefighting tools. Among the highlights is the 1902 Shand Mason extending ladder – a brilliant example of early 20th-century engineering. The gallery also features the world’s only right-hand-drive Mack Aerialscope, which served Auckland for 31 years, as well as historic vehicles like the 1935 Ford V8, affectionately known as "The Rattler", which played a key role in modernising Auckland’s fire service.
Visitors can explore how firefighting techniques evolved and discover the bravery of the firefighters who stood at the frontlines. With interactive and educational displays, Whare Tinei Ahi offers an enriching experience for all ages, celebrating both innovation and the courage of those who have worked to protect New Zealand communities.
