Know my name: global presents works of art by living women artists who have pushed the limits of artistic practice through experimentation with form, colour and spatial innovation from the 1960s to the present day.

This display brings together recent acquisitions alongside key works drawn from the International, First Nations and Australian collections.

Colour ricochets between works in the space, deployed for formalist and conceptual concerns, as well as strategies of activism, disruption and shock. Other works act in dialogue with the brutalist architecture of the National Gallery building. Featuring the new acquisition Rainbow pickett 1965/2021 by prominent feminist artist Judy Chicago and the politically provocative text-based installation Inflammatory essays 1978-83 by Jenny Holzer, this exhibition showcases breakthrough works by artists at the forefront of their practices.

Know my name: global is a Know My Name project, the National Gallery initiative celebrating the work of all women artists to enhance understanding of their contribution to Australia’s cultural life.
