An exhibition of recent work by the artist Jennifer McRae, RSA elect, will be on display at Bourne Fine Art, 6 Dundas Street, Edinburgh, between 20 September and 26 October 2013.

Portraits and still-lifes in watercolours, oil, pencil and etching predominate. Drawing is elemental in McRae's work and her subjects - human and inhuman - are portrayed in intricate detail and with acute observation. Her range of palette is extensive; the subtly and lightness of tone rendered in a seated back view entitled 'The silence of thought' contrasts dramatically with the simple and bold design of Tabio on red: The exquisite botanical wallpaper, courtesy of Timorous Beasties, which adorns the background to the portrait 'Exotica (Hitesh) shows the artist's desire to experiment with an expression of individuality within each portrait.

Jennifer McRae studied painting at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen from 1987-1992 and received a First Class degree in Fine Art. On returning to Edinburgh, McRae continued to develop her skills and she joined The Edinburgh Printmakers' Workshop. As a result of this experience she believes her current work retains the graphic linear qualities of printmaking.

McRae's distinct style and talent for portraiture continues to be admired and recognized. As a result she has been commissioned to portray a significant number of well-known figures including Dame Judi Dench, Michael Frayn and Michael Vaughan. Most recently McRae was commissioned to create a portrait of Sir Chris Hoy in recognition of his success during the London Olympics 2012. The final work was designed as a triptych to represent the 3 gold medals which he achieved during the games and is on display at The National Galleries of Scotland.
