A feature of the 2013 exhibition is the large number of famous Britons who have portraits showing how interest in the genre remains so potent. Paul Brason’s portrait of H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh will be the focus of much attention.

National figures such as the politician and writer Tony Benn, depicted by Andrew Festing and Alan Bennett, one of our top playwrights, portrayed by Sam Dalby will be hung with Guy Kinder’s portrait of the best selling crime writer Ian Rankin.

Tim Cummings has painted the noted actress Patricia Hodge and Antony Williams the veteran actor Sir Donald Sinden. Another of our top actors, Sir Antony Sher by James Allen joins Festus Mogae, the former President of Botswana and UN Climate Change Envoy by David Colby and the South African Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorious who is painted by Natalie Holland.

John Walton has captured the late watch-maker Dr. George Daniels on canvas. Richard Foster has painted the Scottish entrepreneur and charity worker Mrs Ann Gloag. June Mendoza has chosen artists as her sitters, the painter, Ken Howard and the sculptors Nic Fiddian-Green and Chaim Stephenson..

This exhibition also marks the launch of the new £20,000 Self Prize, to promote self-portraiture and a special section of the exhibition will be devoted to an exhibition of self-portraits which aims to push the boundaries of self-representation in painting and drawing.

Prizes awarded by the Society are the Ondaatje Prize for Portraiture, The Prince of Wales Award for Portrait Drawing, The Changing Faces Prize and The de Laszlo Foundation prize. Works by the winner of the Bulldog Bursary, Olha Pryymak, will be on display.

It is the perfect place to choose an artist if you are interested in commissioning a portrait and a consultant is in the gallery throughout the exhibition to help you.
