This September Brazilian artist Paula Klien (b. 1968, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is coming to London to exhibit her ink paintings at the acclaimed Start art fair, marking the first showcase of Klien’s work in the UK. Now in its fourth edition, Start kicks off the artworld’s Autumn season, just three weeks prior to Frieze London.

With a 10 year career as a photographer, as well as accomplishments in dance and music, last year Klien re-dedicated herself to making art after completing a residency at Kunstgut Academy of Fine Arts Berlin. 2017 has already seen her gain gallery representation with aquabitArt Gallery in Berlin - with whom she had a solo show in February and who are presenting her work at Positions Berlin Art Fair concurrent with Start. Also this year Klien has exhibited at Clio Art Fair, New York, and arteBA, Buenos Aires, where her work was shown by Emma Thomas Gallery, São Paulo. The prolific artist has been selected for an independent presentation at Start to introduce her work to London audiences.

At Start, Klien will show four new canvases (each 170 x 147 cm) that she has never exhibited before. The paintings reveal her use of monochromatic Chinese ink, an age-old medium which stands as the antithesis to her former photographic technical apparatus. Freed from constraints, Klien uses ink to create abstract paintings, over which she cannot maintain complete control and which draw upon the artist’s automatic impulses. With today’s ever-increasing circulation of images, Klien explores the transience of the modern world using a timeless technique.
