This exhibition is designed to challenge the stereotypical perception of Harley-Davidson as just another big brand name or an imposing feat of engineering. Behind every motorcycle there is an individual and a story of personal choice, effort, and life journey. Each bike inevitably bears the mark of its owner’s individuality and traces the rider’s private history. The show presents Harley-Davidson as a complex phenomenon seamlessly fusing technological innovation and self-expression.
In its more than centennial history, H-D has come to symbolise independence, uniqueness, and individual choice. The characteristic elements of its rebellious style – leather jackets, blue jeans, bandanas, heavy boots, tattoos, and looks that convey the risk-taking and speed-loving spirit of the road – are firmly ingrained in the mass consciousness. A true American legend, the brand frequently appears in films, music videos, and fiction.
The exhibition’s key takeaway is that, even among the bikes that originally came from the same conveyor belt, no two Harley-Davidsons are identical. Every rider gradually transforms his motorcycle according to his own habits and aesthetic sensibilities. Little by little, a serial model morphs into a unique object – a portrait of its owner representing his or her alter ego.
The show features motorbikes that were upgraded in private custom shops and garages, original custom projects that took several years to complete, as well as vehicles that travelled thousands of miles across Russia. To a certain extent, their design was affected by fashion, but mostly shaped by the riders, their stories, and their hands-on experience of long-distance journeys.
The majority of the exhibits relate to the H-D community in Russia. Harsh climate, great distances, uneven roads, and can-do attitude inform a distinct approach to the ride – more practical and austere, and yet deeply emotional. For the Russian enthusiasts, Harley-Davidson embodies not only freedom, but perseverance. It encapsulates the thrill of the open road, technical ingenuity, endurance, and a sense of camaraderie between man and his reliable mount.
The roar of the engine drowns out the frantic hubbub of city streets, the headwind blows away all that is superficial and mundane, while friendship and community fuel a unique social experience. The show celebrates the modern-day Russian rider – dreamer, trailblazer, and loner whose bike is the extension of his own self, constantly pushing past the horizon of possibility.
