The special exhibition at the Literature Museum focuses on a work of world literary significance. As one of Austria’s most renowned authors, Thomas Bernhard continues to polarize audiences to this day. Since 2023, his estate has been held by the Austrian National Library. The exhibition presents manuscripts, letters, and photographs from all phases of his life, as well as finds never previously displayed in public. Of particular importance is the echo of Bernhard’s work in international contemporary literature. Is his style really as easy to imitate as is sometimes claimed? The focus lies on our relationship to nature, to the body, and to the institutions that shape our lives.

Bringing together archival materials and rare documents, the exhibition offers an in-depth exploration of Bernhard’s literary legacy and the enduring relevance of his writing. By tracing the development of his work alongside personal correspondence and unpublished items, it provides new insight into the author’s creative process while revealing the broader cultural and intellectual context in which his works emerged.

Beyond its historical perspective, the exhibition also considers Bernhard’s continuing influence on contemporary literature. Through the dialogue between his manuscripts and the voices of later writers, it examines the ways in which his distinctive language, themes, and uncompromising vision continue to resonate across generations. The exhibition invites visitors to reconsider Bernhard not only as a defining figure of Austrian literature, but also as an author whose reflections on society, identity, and human existence remain strikingly relevant today.
