Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
The roar of water sends shocks and reminders,
Renfrew Ravine refuge,
Nowhere else I need to be,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
Rainy Vancouver makes for a thunderous gush,
So no one ever hears,
The shame and shouts of despair,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
Running water wild through urban life,
Helps put sentences together again,
When searching for faith is rife,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
Water is all the eyes can see,
And as it pours harder,
Feeling is the best way to stay dry,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
City creeks run tunnel deep,
So you'd better run when it rises,
Nature is still spiteful around concrete,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
You may not come here for calm,
But the burst brings stillness,
The burst ignites the shadowed dreams,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
Far away from the meth centers and hives,
The need for needles and pipes,
A tent in nature before a park eviction,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
There is no shame in wasting a day,
Feeling flow and watching time wane,
The solace of trees needing no pathways,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
No respite for the pooch walker,
No recipe for the smell of wet dog,
No fees for a paid park workout,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
The rain may bode well for little critters,
But beware the Cooper’s Hawk,
Urban adaptation is any means necessary,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
The trees allow for a spliff to burn,
Inhale, exhale, sound, smell, cold, might,
Travel to no other plights,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
If you really listen, if you really feel,
Music in the sound of waters passing,
A body adapting, shape shifting, dancing,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
Hopefully never on harvest moon nights,
Where surburbites still celebrate the moon,
Adding dance and light to its passing splendor,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
Renfrew Ravine creates time for young love,
The first time lip lockers,
Thumping heartbeats will not stop flowing water,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
Once toxic, once a killer,
Turned stormwater manager,
Turned the creator of salmon miracles,
Walk on Still Creek when it rains,
Circled by immigrant dreams,
The energy of blue-collar gratitude,
Respite from the nostalgia of past lives,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
When one is one with solitude,
Body of water swaying leaves,
A medicine for dark thoughts and means,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
No matter the darkness or the deep,
Violent water unmasks fear,
Showing what must be thrown and kept,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
Every wonder, every worry,
Sets and rises bloom to uprises,
No surprises away from high-rises,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
A man with a two-second call,
A woman needing to wash it all,
Confused little one as to where to fall,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
Reminisce past lives, past energies, past loves,
The ones that have come and gone by,
The travels to lose and find purpose,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
Stare into the subtle violence,
Rushing water ruling center,
Ignition for the lover to be in the beloved,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
Water as a passing of time,
Demands no teatime or dime,
Just eternal flow to solve the urban riddle and rhyme,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
The time for monkey thoughts ends here,
Send them to the dancing trees,
And to the water and rain dissolvers of chaos,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
Roar of water, roar of urban soul,
Roar of hustle in a stream of flow,
Roar of restoration turned roar of peace,
Walks on Still Creek when it rains,
I feel no more pain,
I feel no more pain,
Renfrew Ravine and rain.
Still Creek flows from Burnaby through East Vancouver’s Renfrew-Collingwood neighbourhood and is one of the last remaining open streams in Vancouver. Between East Vancouver’s 29th and 22nd Avenue, the creek flows through Renfrew Ravine and Renfrew Park. This area of Still Creek is home to over 60 species of birds, and you might even spot squirrels, skunks, coyotes, raccoons, and opossums.
Still Creek had endured decades of industrial pollution. However, thanks to community initiatives and restoration societies like the Still Moon Arts Society, it has seen the return of salmon and eagles, and it serves as a heavily urbanized watershed that acts as a natural drainage channel for the city.
The Renfrew Ravine and Renfrew Park portions of Still Creek are Vancouver’s best-kept secret parks, a relaxing river walk amidst the urban rigamarole. It also hosts the annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival, where the community celebrates the harvest moon with events, arts, tours, and a fair every September, marking the end of summer.
