Over the years, the Kunsthaus has assembled a significant group of works by Mario Sala (born 1965). Trained as a graphic artist, Sala lives and works in Winterthur, and his practice extends across multiple media, including painting, drawing, objects, and sculpture. His work is not confined to gallery spaces alone, as some of his pieces are also installed in public settings, making them accessible to a wider audience.

The exhibition focuses on the multi-part work Wild bunch, acquired in 2023, which serves as a key example of Sala’s artistic approach. In this piece, he layers multiple images on top of one another, creating figures that initially appear recognizable but gradually dissolve into ambiguity, producing an effect similar to an optical illusion. This technique invites viewers to look more closely and question their own perception, as forms shift and overlap in unexpected ways.

Through this interplay of images, Mario Sala’s work brings together different levels of reality, blurring the boundaries between the visible and the imagined. His compositions open up a dreamlike dimension in which meaning is not fixed but constantly in flux, encouraging a contemplative and immersive viewing experience.
