Recognition of art by women series began at the Norton in 2011 in an effort to recognize and promote living women artists through solo exhibitions, addressing the persistent inequity in exhibiting and acquiring art by women. Now in its 10th iteration and generously funded by the Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund and the MLDauray Arts Initiative, Recognition of art by women jumpstarted a new era of programming at the museum — as a platform for solo shows by emerging and mid-career female artists. The series sets a high standard of excellence by establishing a tone of ambitious and thought-provoking exhibition-making that continues throughout the institution today, allowing the Norton to aspire toward a more inclusive and representative future.
This exhibition, Recognition of art by women: in retrospect, honors the past nine RAW artists as the Norton ushers in its 10th recognized artist, Danielle Mckinney. Featuring artwork by Jenny Saville, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Phyllida Barlow, Klara Kristalova, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Svenja Deininger, Nina Chanel Abney, María Berrío, and Rose B. Simpson, In retrospect reflects the series' impact, seizing the opportunity to present a group exhibition that illustrates the breadth of talent the series brought to light.
The exhibition highlights the work of nine artists who approach artmaking from diverse and distinct perspectives. This presentation showcases a wide range of themes, and when viewed collectively, these nine artists demonstrate that mark-making is emotional, personal, and courageous.
