Japingka Aboriginal Art Gallery presents From the desert, a major exhibition that features stunning artworks by some of the most celebrated senior artists in Aboriginal Australian art, including masters of the Western and Central Desert movement. Experience one of Australia’s most significant contemporary art stories through bold, iconic paintings from leading artists. It opens on 20 February and runs until 8 April 2026 in Gallery 1.

The show highlights artists from diverse language groups, such as Pintupi, Warlpiri, Pitjantjatjara, Anmatyerre, and Alyawarre. You'll see the unique styles: Western Desert art often uses geometric patterns and repeating motifs for an optical effect, while Central Desert works are more fluid, organic, and full of vibrant colours.

Featured artists include renowned names like Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, George Hairbrush Tjungurrayi, Yukultji Napangati, Tommy Watson, Thomas Tjapaltjarri, George Ward Tjungurrayi, Walangkura Napanangka, Ningura Napurrula, Gloria Petyarre, Kudditji Kngwarreye, and many others. Their paintings capture Dreaming stories, sacred sites, and desert landscapes using acrylic on canvas or linen.
