Rossicontemporary is pleased to announce an exhibition dedicated to the Belgian artist Jean- Georges Massart (1953–2022).

On this occasion, the public is invited to (re)discover the work of Jean-Georges Massart (1953, Tienen). Much admired by his peers, the discreet sculptor once said: To choose to make visible / The almost nothing. Developed over five decades, his work constitutes an artistic language of rare sobriety.

As a young artist, Massart quickly focused on the essence of matter and space. His measured interventions are made of humble materials: bamboo, hollow elder, willow, pebbles, wax, and natural pigments. They are situated at the intersection of Land Art and Minimal Art. Massart’s approach is a form of writing in space, inspired by the primordial gestures of gathering, collecting, and handling. His technique relies on minimal intervention, where rationality and geometric shapes converge with the poetic and mythical, seeking to reveal the essential identity of the object and the site.

The sixty selected pieces for this exhibition were drawn from the artist’s studio and offer an opportunity to encounter a body of work whose physical presence is indispensable to its full appreciation. The complementary publication aims to fill the absence of a monograph and will, we hope, contribute to the recognition of this unique oeuvre.
