Rex Hausmann, In search of the color yellow | notes on Las Olas, mixed media on canvas, 40x30x2.50 in
Title
In Search of the Color Yellow | Notes on Las Olas
Year
2022
This painting is currently one of three self-portrait panda paintings. The first one was Rain rain go away, dated 2015, the second one was St Denis on the mind, dated 2017, and the third one is this painting - Notes on Las Olas, dated 2022. The Panda is the animal manifestation of the artist; a type of spirit animal who appreciates the simple things in life, like enjoying a coffee and donut. He is wearing a NY Mets jacket with the letters changed to spell out the historical shopping district in downtown Fort Lauderdale, FL. The baseball hat is an obvious reference to the artist, Vincent Van Gogh. The panda has a guardian angel protector on his right shoulder - the panda mascot in a track suit who can materialize as big as a building or as small as a chip off the ol' block. The left shoulder is occupied by a samurai warrior, a picture Hausmann has had in his wallet for years. The samurai is a reoccurring reference to the artist's family history with the samurai swords passed down for generations in his family. The background is the color yellow, a Van Gogh reference as well as Hausmann's pursuit of happiness, peace, and enlightenment. The flowers are a reference to the motto: "Grow Where You are Planted", a credence of the family run art studio complex, the Hausmann MillWorks, where over 100 artists have studios in a multiblock compound.
