I love to write and radio about music!

The one-hour radio program I host and produce, Beat Latino, airs on Vocalo (Chicago Public Media) and in Berlin (multicult.fm) and Beat Latino specials air in more than twenty U.S. cities. Beat Latino specials also air weekly in Mexico City on CódigoCDMX. I am also a regular guest on Global Notes on Worldview (Chicago Public Media), National Public Radio programs such as Latin Roots on World Café and Public Radio International’s The World.

In terms of music writing, I am a member of the editorial board and publish a monthly music article in Revista Contratiempo. My writing is also featured regularly in Gozamos, Afropop Worldwide and Nat Geo Music.

I have to credit the tenacious insistence of a Mexican mom and a German/Swedish dad for the extraordinary gift of a bilingual and bicultural heritage. Thanks to them, I grew up between two cities named St. Louis, one in Missouri, and the other, San Luis Potosi, Mexico. I have traveled extensively and lived in Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Honduras, Colombia, and other Latin countries, as well as having circled the globe at least once, visiting most of Europe, India, Japan, Kenya, Senegal and Morocco.

My music journalism explores the extraordinary diversity of the global music scene with an emphasis on Latin and Latino music – from the most traditional roots music to cutting-edge electronic grooves. It is also very important to me to focus on the cultural riches that immigrants bring to the country of destiny, an invaluable and often unrecognized gift.

All of this, because I truly believe that the art of music is essential to humanity, and that it holds enormous revelatory and transformative power to bring different peoples together, as we share the best parts of ourselves in melodies and rhythms that express our hearts and cultures.
