Thomas J Price has created a monumental new public sculpture in Circular Quay for the inaugural Neil Balnaves Tallawoladah Lawn Commission.

Measuring more than three metres tall and cast in glowing golden bronze, Ancient feelings depicts a fictional woman constructed from observations of daily life, 3D scans and sourced images. Located outside of the MCA on Tallawoladah Lawn, the sculpture is both majestic and deeply human, reflecting Price’s commitment to elevating everyday people through public monuments.

This commanding new work asks us to consider who is typically depicted by statues, and why some stories are valued over others, continuing Price’s engagement with ideas of power and representation in public space.

Ancient feelings is the artist’s first major public sculpture in Australia, and an invitation to reflect on the universal emotions and experiences that connect us all.

The Neil Balnaves Tallawoladah Lawn Commission is a new annual series that invites leading Australian and international contemporary artists to create ambitious sculptural works for this prominent site on the foreshore of Warrane/Sydney Harbour. Free and open to all.
