Monday 26 May 2014 Giacomo Guidi Arte Contemporanea Rome presents the solo show of Maurizio Donzelli, imenigma, curated by Alberto Dambruoso.

Maurizio Donzelli showcases in this exhibition a new cycle of works, many of which were specially created for Giacomo Guidi Arte Contemporanea, divided into different methods and techniques that enable a comprehensive approach to his artistic career: from water-colour drawings, to Mirrors, until the recent tapestries.

In the water-colours come to life a mobile sign, floating, expanding while overlapping itself along the surface of the sheet, thus making the viewer lose any idea of the centrality of the work; in other subjects the drawings seem to be composed of shape - color, of drops of pure color, that condense focusing on the paper, generating new and original images in the approach between the one and the other form. The cycle of works entitled Mirrors is probably the most popular of the artist. The Mirrors could be defined as the enclosures of signs and forms made iridescent by the filters of prismatic lenses, which continually transform their original nature depending on the vantage point of the viewer, who is invited by the artist to actively participate in the continuous redefinition of work.

Finally, the tapestries realised in the Flanders represent one of his recent artistic projects, in which the drawing produces images so visionary and ancestral to leave us amazed and fascinated. These are mysterious, elusive, seductive and alienating images at the same time, or to use a neologism: imenigmatic images.

The title chosen for the exhibition is already evocative, being imenigma an anagram of the Italian word “immagine” (image). Imenigma invites us to focus our attention on the revelation power of images, their enigmatic nature, including the inevitability of the observer in the definition and interpretation of the work.

The tendency of these works to arouse processes of transformation reminds us of the motto solve et coagula so dear to the alchemists.

But above all the works of Maurizio Donzelli, constantly fluctuating between the rule and the chaos, between the impossible and the tangible, with great depth of language, make us think and dream at the same time.

The catalog titled Maurizio Donzelli /Imenigma, which accompanies the exhibition, is published by Giacomo Guidi with texts by the curator Alberto Dambruoso and Maurizio Donzelli.

Maurizio Donzelli has to his credit numerous exhibitions and publications such as Spettacolo di Niente, 2003 Mazzotta, printed on the occasion of his eponymous exhibition at the National Engraving Institute of Rome curated by Luigi Ficacci; Lo Sguardo del Disegnatore, published by l’Obliquo; Metamorphosis, Mousse Publishing, printed in 2012 for his solo exhibition at Palazzo Fortuny in Venice and curated by Andrea Viliani.
