The Christopher Cutts Gallery is excited to present Birds of prey, a solo exhibition of Alexander Rasmussen’s brand new suite of paintings created over the past year. In this series, the artist expands on his signature merging of industrial aesthetics and playful impulses, creating striking, raw paintings that explore environment, process, and instinct.

This exhibition will take place in two parts, with each featuring unique pieces! The first part will run from April 26 – May 10, 2025, and the second part will run from May 24 – June 14, 2025.

Developed in an agricultural environment, Rasmussen’s paintings are informed by the industrial materials surrounding his workspace and the natural landscape on which his life and practice are based. The works channel the language of machinery —repetition, wear, force— while harnessing the elemental energy of the natural world. Rasmussen explores the synergy between mechanical process and artistic impulse, machine and muscle, texture and terrain.

The artist’s process echoes the approach of a bird of prey in flight, hovering around oversized canvases laid flat on the ground, scanning, acting, and reacting, methodologically striking with his brush and pigment. This interaction between body and surface imparts a physicality to each piece as Rasmussen works to create something larger than himself —something beyond his control, like a natural force unfolding.

Birds of prey draws upon Rasmussen’s learned skills from years of developing his practice —muscle memory, automatic maneuvers, and refined preferences— and taps into an innate, purer spontaneity with a childlike freedom that allows for new, organic expressions to emerge. This is reflected in the playful artwork titles, like Sawdust Banana and Air Hog, along with his inquisitive exploration of scale. The exhibition features both modestly sized pieces and massive stretches of canvas, including the colossal 23-foot-wide painting Generator, which will be shown in the second part of the exhibition.

Rasmussen’s new body of work creates an immersive experience that invites viewers to experience the rawness of instinct, the force of nature, and the unexpected grace of industry.
