Laveronica contemporary art is proud to announce “This is Jerusalem, Mister Pasolini”, a solo show by the Israeli artist Amir Yatziv, which will be inaugurated on Wednesday, 25 February 2012 at 8.30 p.m. and will be open until Wednesday, 4 April.

“This is Jerusalem, Mister Pasolini” is a project focusing on iconography and, in this specific case, that of Christianity. Yatziv underscores the iconic divergence (the term “icon” comes from the Greek eikon, meaning “image”) of Pasolini between the glorifying representations of Christian history and the places in which this history was made.

The video projection shown by the artist is composed of Pasolini’s audio account during his trip to the “Holy” land where he wanted to set The Gospel According to St Matthew and a montage of the film wich he finannaly made in south Italy and in the town of Matera. The video is simply Pasolini’s journey, imbued with all the iconographic arsenal of Western Christianity, which is dissolved by contact with “the great lesson in humility” imparted to him by the Arab-Israeli landscape. The “tragic, sunburnt, abandoned landscape” is the eikon image that most profoundly restores to the history of humanity the essence of the human and religious experience.

Yatziv’s solo show includes several black-and-white photographs (“On the way to Nazareth”, “90 km from Tel Aviv”, “The Dead Sea”) taken from the videos of the director’s tour of Palestine. The landscapes of the West Bank, recomposed by the artist frame by frame, render – with marvellous plasticity – the sense of grandeur sought by Pasolini and found only in these few places.
