The Buchmann Galerie is delighted to present the exhibition Frozen in Time by Lawrence Carroll.

Lawrence Carroll’s nuanced oeuvre is situated between painting and sculpture. Over the course of more than 35 years, the artist created a remarkably diverse and rigorous body of work distinguished by a unique poetic presence.

Time plays an important role in the artist’s extensive artistic output. Many paintings and sculptures were created over long time periods and in various studios between Malibu, Marquette, Venice, Bolsena and New York. Carroll’s works are defined by a respect for the “moment in time” of their creation. The object-like character and material presence of Carroll’s works endeavour to take account of their significance in space. Thus not only the front, but all visible sides are of equal importance, reflecting the artist’s concerns in constellations of dimensions and space, light and shadow, colour and object, volume and scale. This idea can be seen particularly well in the large Slip Painting, 2006–17, but also in the four Page Paintings, works which completely avoid a pictorial front-out face and instead deliberately shift the focus on the two sides.

Lawrence Carroll was born in Melbourne in 1954 and passed away in Cologne in 2019. He studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. Throughout his career, he participated in numerous important exhibitions including Einleuchten (Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, 1989), documenta IX (1992), and the 55th Venice Biennale at the Vatican Pavilion (2013). Last year, the Museo Madre in Naples dedicated an extensive retrospective exhibition to the artist.

The artist’s works are represented in important collections such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney; the Kunstmuseum in Stuttgart; the Margulies Collection in Miami; the Jumex Collection in Mexico City; the Panza Collection in Varese; and the Wemhöner Collection in Herford and Berlin. Buchmann Galerie Berlin/Lugano has represented the artist since 1994 and presented his work in thirteen solo exhibitions.
