This is the 19th year of our bi-annual Winter Exhibition showing approximately 40 Old Master paintings. These represent a wide range of subjects including winter landscapes and landscapes, portraits, still lifes, seascapes, flower pieces and interiors.

Amongst the paintings exhibited is Pieter Brueghel the Younger’s depiction of ‘Spring’ painted in the mid 1620’s, after his father’s drawing dated 1565 in the Albertina, Vienna.

There is an exquisite, small painting of a Brazilian landscape by Frans Post, dated 1663. Frans Post accompanied Prince Johan Maurits of Nassau to north-eastern Brazil when he was appointed Governor General of the new territory in 1636. On his return to Holland 7 years later he continued painting views based on the material he had amassed during his time there.

We are exhibiting a previously unpublished painting by Abraham Mignon of a swag of flowers and fruit representing the Four Elements. This wonderful example of his work is greatly influenced by Jan Davidsz. de Heem with whom he worked in the late 1660’s early 1670’s.

We are also showing a Willem van de Velde the Younger painting of ‘Shipping in a Calm’ dated around 1659-60. Willem van de Velde and his father worked together in Amsterdam until they both emigrated to England in 1672 after the French invasion. They entered the service of Charles II.

The exhibition also includes works by Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder, Paul Bril, Gerrit Dou, Jacob van Hulsdonck, Paulus Moreelse, Isack van Ostade, Jan Steen and Joachim Wtewael.
