Blindspot Gallery is pleased to present Every Daily, the latest mixed media work of Hong Kong young artist Ho Siu Nam, South. This will be Ho’s second exhibition at Blindspot Gallery, following “Into Light” in 2011.

Every Daily marks a breakthrough in Ho’s creative work. In a departure from his previous photography, this new series is his first to incorporate the element of painting, based on a collection of black and white photographs of Tin Shui Wai. One of the largest new towns in Hong Kong, Tin Shui Wai is packed with newly-built, large-scale residences. The artist fills the sky between the densely packed residential buildings with uniformly sized blocks of different colors. The black and white photography stands in contrast to the colors of the painting, while painting interferes with the photos to blur the proportion and the sense of distance between objects. The result is a collection of sharply intriguing images.

Ho has lived in Tin Shui Wai since his father's passing. In the past few years, he has captured the changing facets of Tin Shui Wai through his lens, as he seeks to turn the photographic act into an imaginary journey with his father in his place of dwelling. The process of painting blocks resembles endless memorials. Ho's previous works such as Into Light and Impermanence set out to illuminate the transience of living. In a similar vein of random existence, the artist picks the color of each block by throwing a dice. He goes on to paint the repetitive, uniformly sized blocks on the photographs using the paintbrushes left by his late father.

Through the mechanical and monotonous process of painting blocks, Ho attempts to reach a meditative state of self-healing for the loss of his father. Beyond Ho's reminiscence of his father, the work also reflects his silent protest against aestheticism and salon-style photography. This series is Ho's first series to incorporate painting into photography. It marks not only his new attempt in his creative work, but also his questioning of photography - his only creative medium over the past years - and its essential definition.

South Ho will be present at the opening reception. Media interviews are welcome and can be arranged.

Born in 1984, South Ho graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2006. He became a full time artist and established his studio in 2008. In 2013, he co-founded 100 ft.
