Gagliardi Art System is pleased to present the new personal exhibition of Giuliana Cunéaz, 3D, a series of new 3D installations created in the past two years, as well as a group of 20 works (photos and drawings) complemented by plastic works and by the eyeglasses-sculpture.
The 3D stereoscopic projections, which deal with environmental disorders, will form an immersive environment more than five square meters large: they are out of control areas that directly interact with the reality level, allowing us to embark on unpredictable trips among the waves of a storm, the mysterious spaces of a cave, the lava flow of a volcano or the collision between gigantic icebergs. The cycle is inspired by the theme of the sublime, and is also meant as a tribute to the great protagonists of Romantic painting, such as Caspar David Friedrich and William Turner. In these works, Giuliana Cunéaz approaches a new aesthetic vision, defined by a set of reflections on current issues, such as natural or environmental disasters.
As the artist claims: “As modern humanity contemplates the spectacle of catastrophe, it must first of all ask itself questions about the form and meaning of its responsibilities. What shines through the contemporary face of catastrophe is not only the violence that springs from nature’s energy, but the presumption of individuals who believe they can govern the destiny of the universe without respecting the ecosystem.” The exhibition is completed by 20 project works, including photos and drawings, as well as by a series of plastic/sculptural interventions - paradoxical time machines, inside which visitors can admire a series of animations placed in estranging contexts.
These plastic/sculptural elements become a space of projection for an audience that is faced with an ever-metamorphosing universe. Among the novelties in this exhibition we should mention the 3D eyeglasses-sculptures, true prototypes that have been personalized by the artist in order to look at the works on view. In this way the spectators, too, equipped with a ‘mask’ of their own, become a living part of the work.
The exhibition will see the publication of a theme book on the artist’s 3D production, with texts by Lorand Hegyi, director of the Musée d’Art Moderne of Saint-Etienne, and by Marco Bazzini, director of the Museo Pecci in Prato.
Parallel to the gallery exhibition, Giuliana Cunéaz will present her installation Waterproof (2011) at the 1st International Biennale Project Daejeon 2012: Energy (September 5th – November 18th 2012) which will take place in Daejeon (South Korea), and will be entirely devoted to the relationship between art, science and new technologies.
Giuliana Cunéaz (Aosta, 1959) lives and works in Aosta and Milan.
Giuliana Cunéaz graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts of Turin. She has used all media, from video installation to sculpture, from photography to painting, and even screen painting, a special technique she developed. Starting from the early 1990s, she has explored the interaction between plastic/sculptural research and video experimentation. She was among the first artists to work on stereoscopic 3D images, a process she has employed since 2003.
The artist identified an entirely innovative dimension in which natural elements are actualized through 3D imaging and the use of nanotechnology, which have become a point of departure for a series of recent projects, including Zona Franca (2004), Quantum Vacuum (2005), I Mangiatori di Patate (2005), Occulta Naturae (2006), The Growing Garden (2007-2008), The God Particle and Matter Waves (2009), Neither Snow nor Meteor Showers (2010), Waterproof (2011), Zone fuori controllo (2011-2012), and Mobili in Mobilis (2012).
Among other events, she exhibited at the Videoformes Festival in 1991, 1993 and 1996. In 1994 she participated in the Sao Paulo Biennial in Brazil. In 2002 she exhibited at the Bucarest Museum of Contemporary Art. In 1995 her works were presented at the Museo Revoltella in Trieste, in 2000 at the Museo Pecci, Prato, and at the Torre del Lebbroso in Aosta. In 2002 she took part in Exit, within the space of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (Turin). In 2004, as part of Rome’s Quadriennial, she exhibited at Anteprima in Turin. In 2008 she participated in the Tina B. Festival in Prague, as well as in the third edition of the Seville Biennale entitled Youniverse. In 2009 she exhibited at the PAV, in Turin’s Centro d'Arte Contemporanea, and took part in the collective exhibition Corpi, Automi Robot at Lugano’s Museo d’Arte. In 2010 she had a show at the Nuovissimo Arsenale in Venice, as part of the Tina B. project for the Architecture Biennale. In 2011 she was invited to Premio Maretti, in the premises of the Pecci Museum in Prato, and participated in the exhibition Principia Stanze e Sostanze delle Arti Prossime in Milan’s Piazza Duomo and in 2012, again in Milan, she exhibited in the show Pelle di Donna, Identità e bellezza tra Arte e Scienza, in the premises of the Turin Triennale.
