Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce 2 journeys, a two-person exhibition featuring married artists, Gugger Petter and John Torrey. Together, they present two distinct bodies of work shaped by the written word and years of living and traveling abroad.
Gugger Petter creates female portraits from thousands of rolled newspaper tubes, transforming the printed word into richly textured tapestries. Drawing inspiration from Renaissance portraiture, Byzantine iconography, and her years in Italy and Mexico, her work bridges past and present. Included in the exhibition is Woman with howling dogs, inspired by a recent visit to Izamal, Yucatán, where the city's stray dogs became both subject and metaphor for resilience, memory, and untold stories.
John Torrey's Lingua series features oil paintings inspired by his travels through Europe and the Middle East, as well as his study of ancient languages, including Old Latin and Aramaic. Exploring the expressive beauty of letters and script, his paintings reveal language as both visual form and a record of cultural history.
