Every year, the Stedelijk Museum, in collaboration with the Stichting De Best Verzorgde Boeken, presents a selection of publications chosen by an expert jury from books submitted by publishers over the course of the previous year. The Netherlands has a long-standing and internationally recognized tradition of outstanding book design, distinguished by innovation in graphic design, lithography, printing, and bookbinding. This annual presentation celebrates the excellence and diversity of contemporary Dutch graphic design.
The selected books reflect a wide range of approaches, from experimental layouts to refined craftsmanship, highlighting how design, materiality, and content converge within the book form. Together, they offer insight into current trends in publishing and demonstrate the continued relevance of the printed book as a cultural and artistic medium.
The selection process is overseen by two juries: a professional jury composed of specialists in book design, printing, and publishing, and a student jury drawn from leading graphic design programs across the Netherlands. In 2024, a total of 269 books were submitted; the professional jury selected 30 titles, while the student jury chose 32, with thirteen books appearing on both lists, underscoring their broad appeal and exceptional quality.
